Outfit Post: Purple!

Today, in an effort to raise awareness about GLBT bullying, people everywhere wore purple. I'm very skeptical about how/if these things work to "raise awareness" (and what that even means, and how people use it as a replacement for doing other good works, etc) but since at least 98% of my wardrobe is purple, I figured it wouldn't be too much of an imposition (figures may be exaggerated). I thought afterward I should have just worn one of my full-on purple dresses, but I had already picked out the wool skirt, so what are you going to do?

 

This skirt rides up funny so I'm considering just going with it and taking in the waist so it is high-waisted rather than hitting at the high hip. If only I had a sewing machine here!

I wore this outfit to go to my Gender and Women's Studies class, do reading for my modern art class, and form (specious) theories about closeted lesbian artists. I love grad school.

I dreamt up this outfit after seeing Kyla of Blue Collar Catwalk in a similar look. I was very proud of tying my own tie as well!

 

Also, I realized I haven't yet shown my trenchcoat, which I bought a few weeks ago. It is pretty much everything I was looking for; very classic detailing, water-resistant (rather than cotton), khaki colored, with feminine details (in this case the very flattering full skirt). I also love the curved shoulder yoke in the back and the wide lapels.

I wore this outfit to see John Gabriel Borkman at the Abbey Theatre, featuring none other than Alan Rickman in the title role! More on that below.

I went with three of my flatmates and we all decided to dress up a little (although I think I was a little more dressed up than anyone else). This dress has also suffered from my lack of iron, as can very easily be seen.

The play was fantastic, and it was amazing to see some great British/Irish actors there in real life. Also, Alan Rickman's voice is just beyond amazing in person. Also in the play was Lindsay Duncan, who I love in Rome, Fiona Shaw, who has amazing comedic timing (you've seen her in Harry Potter playing Aunt Petunia), and John Kavanagh, who I didn't recognize at first but upon looking at his IMDB page recognized him from Braveheart. 

The Abbey is a lovely and really well-designed theatre. I was literally in the last row, but still could see and hear very well. The set design for this play was amazing, and the seats were even comfortable!

I wore this to give the first presentation of my post-grad career. It was only five minutes but I was still a little nervous. I thought a strong blazer might help! I also wore my LL Bean rainboots, but it didn't actually rain.

This outfit could have been improved with the generous use of an iron, if I had such a thing in my tiny dorm room. I liked it anyway, although I have to say I do still subscribe to the idea that pencil skirts always look better with heels. Maybe next time.

I think there's too much going on with this outfit - I was trying to add a bit of color with the belt, but the proportions seem a bit off, and I think the socks/boots combo might be a little too Victoriana rather than just enough. Ehhh. I did get compliments on my dress, so at least I know that is still super cute! I might try the dress/boots combo again with a different belt and solid-color tights. Or maybe with a different top under, or the dress and a cardigan...thoughts?

Outfit Post: Farmer's market and vintage fair

I wore this to go to a farmer's market then a vintage fair in Dun Laoghaire with some of flatmates. I bought some gorgeous-looking (and smelling!) fruit, gorged myself on crepes, chocolate cake, and apple cider, and picked up a couple of books at the farmer's market (EM Forster and Edna O'Brien).

The vintage fair was full of lovely items, but I didn't find much that I really wanted to commit to (at least not much that fit or I could afford! There were a few lovely print dresses in teeny sizes and plenty of gorgeous jewelry). I did pick up this very fine silk scarf...but once I got it home I started to worry that it was too old-lady, or not my colors, or something. I still like it so I'm determined to make it work! Suggestions?

Books, books!

I told you Hodges Figgis was my new favorite place. Look at my haul from yesterday!

 I love E.M. Forester, and this delightful little book of short stories was a perfect addition to my collection. In fact, I bought today the last novel of his I was missing (and almost bought another copy of A Room With A View because I liked the cover, but resisted).

 I love love poetry! And I didn't have any Auden in my poetry collection.

 Since seeing The Edge of Love, I have had a slight Dylan Thomas obsession. He was a bit of a jerk, sure, but that Welsh accent makes me melt. These are love letters to the many and sundry women in his life.

Carol Ann Duffy is my new favorite! She's the current UK poet laureate and an out bisexual woman. Her poems have a modern sensibility but have tend to have a structure that feels very classic and familiar. Plus, hot pink cover!
